Firing & Glaze Record

Every number below comes from the same records the public log reads — target cone, ramp category, and the count-in/count-out pair — extended with what those facts imply for handling: the exact ramp segments the kiln actually climbed, the glaze recipes loaded and their computed food-safety status, and the full story behind every named failure. Nothing here is re-typed by hand, so it cannot drift from the public log.

Firing №44

2026-06-08 · Stoneware · cone 6, standard ramp · 10.0% lost.

Ramp schedule

Candling / water smoking
Room temp → 500°F, door cracked, low heat, to drive off residual moisture before it can flash to steam inside the wall.
Climb to cone 6
500°F → 2232°F (1222°C) at the kiln's standard setting, 108°F/hr.
Hold at peak
10 minutes at cone 6, oxidation.
Cool
Natural cool, kiln off, lid/door shut until below 200°F — never forced through the 573°C (1063°F) quartz inversion, the point most dunting cracks below happened when that rule was cut short.

Glazes loaded

  • Satin Matte White (Cone 6, satin matte) — food-safe, dishwasher- and microwave-safe, absorption < 0.5%.
  • Cobalt Speckle (Cone 6, glossy) — food-safe, dishwasher- and microwave-safe, absorption < 0.5%.
  • Amber Celadon (Cone 5–6, glossy) — food-safe, dishwasher- and microwave-safe, absorption < 0.5%.
  • Honey Speckle (Cone 6, matte) — food-safe, dishwasher- and microwave-safe, absorption < 0.5%.

What failed

  • S-crack (1) — A trimmed mug base, dried too fast under the studio fan — the crack opened at bisque, not glaze.

Firing №45

2026-07-01 · Porcelain · cone 6, slow ramp · 11.1% lost.

Climb to cone 6
500°F → 2165°F (1185°C) at the kiln's slow setting, 27°F/hr.

  • Porcelain Clear (Cone 6, glossy) — food-safe, dishwasher- and microwave-safe, absorption < 0.5%.
  • Cobalt Speckle (Cone 6, glossy) — food-safe, dishwasher- and microwave-safe, absorption < 0.5%.

What failed

  • Dunting (1) — A tall bud vase cracked on cooling through the 573°C quartz inversion — the slow ramp up wasn’t matched by an equally careful cool-down that load.

Firing №46

2026-07-22 · Stoneware + Porcelain · cone 6, standard ramp · 8.3% lost.

  • Glaze crawl (shiver) (1) — Cobalt Speckle shivered off a rim where the glaze layer ran thick — a fit problem between glaze and body, not a firing-temperature problem.
