Bouldering Wall

Route grades for every level

Our bouldering wall uses the Hueco V-scale — the standard in North American gyms. Every route is color-coded by hold to match its grade band, so you always know what you're on. 118 active boulder problems across three caves.

  • V0–V1 Intro 28 routes

Large, positive holds with easy body positions. Perfect for your first session — no experience needed. Most people climb V0–V1 on day one.

  • V2–V3 Developing 32 routes

Smaller holds and more complex movement sequences. Typically reached after a few months of regular climbing. Great benchmark for progressing beginners.

  • V4–V5 Intermediate 24 routes

Demanding footwork, body tension, and dynamic movement. Climbers in this range have usually been training for 6–18 months. A major milestone.

  • V6–V7 Advanced 18 routes

Precise technique, lock-off strength, and problem-specific tactics. Typically requires 1–3 years of dedicated training and structured coaching.

  • V8–V9 Expert 10 routes

Campus-level power, full-body tension, and movement mastery. Fewer than 10% of gym climbers reach V8+. Competition-grade problems.

  • V10+ Elite 6 routes

World-class difficulty. Our V10–V12 problems are set by national-level route setters. Reserved for elite athletes pursuing performance goals.

Top-Rope & Lead Walls

Our roped walls use the Yosemite Decimal System (YDS) and span 5.5 through 5.14b across 40 top-rope and 28 lead routes. Auto-belay lanes cover 5.6–5.11. Routes reset on a rolling 6–8 week cycle.

  • Ryan Torres

Head Coach & Head Route Setter

USAC Level 2 Coach · Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) · 12 Years Teaching

Ryan competed at the National Sport Climbing Festival before transitioning to coaching and route setting full-time. He has set routes for regional USAC competitions and brings that competition-level eye to Summit Climb's wall designs. His Learn to Climb clinics are the highest-rated in Boulder — he has introduced over 1,400 first-time climbers to the sport since 2017. He holds the Single Pitch Instructor credential through the American Mountain Guides Association.

  • Mei Chen

    Youth Program Director

USAC Level 2 Youth Coach · Wilderness First Responder · 9 Years Coaching

Mei grew up climbing in Yosemite and the Flatirons before becoming one of Colorado's most sought-after youth coaches. Under her direction, the Summit Climb Youth Team has placed athletes at the Colorado Youth Climbing League state finals three years running. She holds a Wilderness First Responder certification through NOLS and runs quarterly outdoor climbing trips for youth team members to translate gym skills to rock.

  • Jake Hartwell

    Movement & Technique Coach

USAC Level 1 Coach · Movement Science, CU Boulder · Former National Comp Climber

Jake's background as a former USA Climbing national competitor and his movement science degree from CU Boulder make him a uniquely analytical coach. His Technique Workshops and Advanced Movement Labs use video analysis, structured drills, and periodized training to unlock performance gains that pure volume climbing never achieves. Climbers working with Jake have improved an average of two V-grades within 12 weeks.

Climber Stories

What our community says

  • “I walked in having never climbed before. Ryan's Learn to Climb clinic was patient, thorough, and genuinely fun. Six months later I completed my lead card and just got back from my first outdoor sport climbing trip to Rifle. Summit Climb made all of that possible.”

Sarah L. Member since 2024, now leading 5.11a
  • “My 11-year-old joined Mei's youth team last spring. The team culture she builds is remarkable — competitive but supportive. He placed 4th at the Colorado Youth League state competition in October. As a parent, I've never seen him so motivated by anything.”

David K. Parent of a Youth Team athlete
  • “I'd been stuck at V4 for over a year before I tried Jake's Technique Workshop. He identified my hip positioning problem in about 10 minutes using video analysis. Three months later I'm consistently projecting V7. The coaching here is legitimate.”

    Priya M. Member since 2023, V4 → V7 in 3 months
  • “The route setting is what keeps me coming back. Ryan and the team reset walls on a rolling basis — there's always something new to project. And the 10-punch card never expires, so I can travel for work and not feel like I'm wasting membership money.”

Tom A. Punch card regular, 2+ years

FAQ

Common questions

Still have questions? Email us at hello@summitclimbboulder.com and we'll respond same day.

Book a Session
Do I need any experience to come for the first time?
None at all. Our bouldering walls are accessible from day one — just show up, get a waiver signed, and start climbing. No rope, no harness, no experience required for bouldering. If you want to use the top-rope or lead walls, you'll need to take our Learn to Climb clinic (2 hours, $35) to get your belay certification. You can book same-day if spots are available.
What's the difference between bouldering and top-rope?
Bouldering is roped-free climbing on shorter walls (typically 12–16 feet) with thick crash pads below. It's the most accessible entry point. Top-rope climbing uses ropes anchored at the top of taller walls (30–40 feet) and requires a belay partner with a belay certification. Lead climbing involves clipping the rope into draws as you ascend — it's the format used in outdoor sport climbing and requires additional certification beyond basic belay.
What gear do I need to bring?
Nothing — we have everything you need at the desk. Climbing shoes are $5 per session rental. Harnesses are $3. Chalk bags and chalk are free to use at the gym. If you plan to climb regularly, buying your own shoes is strongly recommended — our staff can help you find the right fit. We stock a full range of beginner to performance shoes in our gear shop.
How often are routes reset?
We reset sections of the bouldering and rope walls on a rolling 6–8 week cycle. The entire gym is typically fully reset every 3 months. Our head route setter Ryan Torres also sets new project-style problems on our competition wall on a monthly basis. We post reset schedules and new-route previews on Instagram a week in advance.
Is the Monthly Membership worth it compared to the Punch Card?
If you climb 4+ times per month, the Monthly Unlimited ($75) beats the Punch Card ($18/visit effectively). The membership also includes 15% off coached programs and 2 guest passes per month. If you travel frequently or climb 2–3 times per month, the Punch Card is more flexible because it never expires. We're happy to advise — just ask at the front desk or email us.
What age is appropriate for the Youth Climbing Team?
The team accepts athletes ages 8–17 who have demonstrated basic climbing competency (typically V2+ and comfortable on top-rope). New athletes do a brief assessment with Mei before joining. The team trains 10 hours per week during competition season (September–March) and 6 hours per week in the off-season. We also offer a Youth Recreational Program for ages 6+ who want structured climbing without competition focus.
Can I come in as a single visitor without a partner?
Absolutely. Our bouldering walls never require a partner. For top-rope, we have 4 auto-belay lanes that allow solo roped climbing up to 35 feet — no partner needed. Auto-belay requires a brief 5-minute orientation on your first visit. For lead climbing, you'll need a belay partner with a valid lead card.
What is your cancellation policy for classes?
We request 24 hours' notice for class cancellations. Cancellations with sufficient notice receive a full credit toward any future class booking. Cancellations under 24 hours or no-shows are charged in full. For the Lead Certification course (4-week), individual missed sessions may be made up in a subsequent cohort with coaching staff approval. Monthly membership holders who cancel also cancel all upcoming class bookings — credits are issued on a per-session basis.
