What We Train

5 Disciplines. One Dojo.

Each martial art develops different attributes — ground control, striking power, throwing leverage, traditional discipline, or full-contact integration. Train one or train all.

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

    The Gentle Art

Ground-based grappling that uses leverage and technique over brute strength. Gi and no-gi classes available from absolute white belt through advanced. Our BJJ program follows the IBJJF curriculum under the direct supervision of a Black Belt.

    All levels · Ages 14+ adult / 8+ kids

  • Muay Thai

    Art of 8 Limbs

Thailand's national combat sport uses fists, elbows, knees, and kicks. Full stand-up striking curriculum from basic combinations to advanced clinch work, counters, and footwork. Heavy bag work and partner pad sessions every class.

    All levels · Ages 12+ adult / 8+ kids

  • Judo

    The Gentle Way

Olympic throwing art that builds explosive hip power and precision body control. Curriculum covers Kodokan throws, pins, chokes, and armbars. Competitive Judo players develop exceptional takedown skills transferable to all grappling arts.

All levels · Ages 5+ (Juniors) · IJF ruleset

  • Karate

    Shotokan System

Traditional Shotokan Karate emphasizes strong fundamentals: precise stances, powerful blocks, crisp striking, and disciplined kata practice. Students progress through the kyu/dan belt system with formal grading examinations twice per year.

All levels · Ages 5+ · WKF kata & kumite

  • Mixed Martial Arts

    Complete Fighter Program

Integrated training combining BJJ, Muay Thai, wrestling, and boxing for complete combat sports preparation. Competition team trains under structured periodization for amateur and professional MMA bouts. All fighters must hold intermediate rank in at least two base disciplines.

BJJ Journey

The Belt Rank Progression

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has one of the most rigorous and respected ranking systems in martial arts. Five belts — each a multi-year investment in technical mastery. There are no shortcuts.

Survival, escapes, basic positioning, fundamental submissions

"Survive a round without getting tapped by a blue belt."

  • Blue Belt

    2–4 years

Guard retention, passing, transitions, mount control, 50+ techniques

"Submit blue belts and survive against purple belts."

  • Purple Belt

    4–7 years

Game development, advanced guard systems, competition strategy

"Developing your own style and instructing lower belts."

  • Brown Belt

    7–10 years

Mastery refinement, competition sharpening, teaching proficiency

"Near-black-belt level — refining every detail of your game."

  • Black Belt

    10+ years

Technical mastery, philosophy of the art, legacy and instruction

"A lifetime achievement in the martial arts."

Promotion Policy

Belt promotions at Bushido Academy are awarded solely by Marcus Chen based on technical proficiency, mat time, competition experience, and attitude — never purchased or fast-tracked. Stripes are awarded between full belt promotions to mark progress. A white belt with 4 stripes is ready for blue belt consideration.

Every Bushido Academy instructor holds active certifications from the governing bodies of their discipline and brings real-world competitive or professional training experience to every class.

  • Marcus Chen

Head Instructor & BJJ Black Belt

IBJJF Certified Black Belt · 3× IBJJF Gold Medalist · 15 Years Teaching

Marcus earned his black belt under professor Eduardo Rocha in São Paulo before relocating to Portland in 2019 to found Bushido Academy. A three-time IBJJF gold medalist in the black belt division, he brings competitive-level BJJ instruction accessible to all skill levels. His Intro to Martial Arts course has introduced over 800 students to the mats since the dojo opened. As head instructor, Marcus also corners and manages the Bushido competition MMA team, having worked with 47 professional fights at regional promotions.

  • Yuki Tanaka

    Muay Thai & Kickboxing Coach

Muay Thai Thailand Licensed Trainer · 180+ Bouts (competitive) · 12 Years Coaching

Yuki trained at Sor. Jor. Sittipetch camp in Chiang Mai for six years before transitioning to a coaching career. With over 180 competitive bouts across Thailand and international circuits, she brings authentic Muay Thai methodology to every session — from the subtleties of teep distance management to the timing of a diagonal knee in the clinch. Her Friday sparring sessions have become the most popular classes at the dojo. She holds an active Thailand Muay Thai license and continues to corner fighters at Pacific Northwest shows.

  • Priya Kapoor

    Judo & Kids Program Director

IJF Level B Certified Coach · 3× USA Judo State Champion · 10 Years Coaching

Priya is a three-time Oregon and Washington state Judo champion who trained under IJF-certified coach Sato Hiroshi for a decade before receiving her own IJF Level B coaching certification. She founded the Bushido Kids curriculum — a custom youth martial arts program that blends age-appropriate elements of Judo, Karate, and BJJ with character development goals (respect, focus, perseverance). Under her direction the Kids program has grown to 140 youth students. She runs quarterly family open days and an annual Kids Tournament in partnership with the Pacific Northwest Judo Association.

Student Stories

What our community says

  • “I tried BJJ at three different gyms before finding Bushido Academy. The difference is Marcus — he explains the "why" behind every technique so it actually makes sense. Six months in, I submitted a blue belt at my first tournament. I never thought I would compete.”

James R. BJJ white belt, 7 months training
  • “My daughter joined the Kids program at age 8 — she was shy and nervous. Priya is extraordinary with children. The discipline and confidence she has developed in 18 months of training has shown up in school, in sports, everywhere. Best investment we've made.”

Sarah T. Parent of a Juniors program student
  • “Yuki's Muay Thai program is the real thing. I've done kickboxing at commercial gyms before and there is no comparison. The pad sessions are intense, the technical curriculum is deep, and the sparring culture is controlled and respectful. She runs a proper camp.”

Derek O. Muay Thai student, 14 months
  • “The family plan is incredible value. My partner and I both train — I do BJJ, she does Judo and Muay Thai. Bushido Academy feels like a real community. Everyone knows your name and genuinely wants to see you improve. We train here five days a week.”

Mia L. Family plan member, 2 years

FAQ

Common questions

Still have questions? Email us at hello@bushidoacademy.com and we'll respond same day.

Book a Class
Do I need any martial arts experience to start?
None at all. Our Intro to Martial Arts course is specifically designed for complete beginners — it runs for 6 weeks and your first class is completely free. Most of our programs have explicit Beginner or All Levels sessions that assume zero prior experience. Show up, be respectful, and be willing to learn — that's all we ask.
What should I bring to my first class?
Comfortable athletic clothing (shorts and a t-shirt) and bare feet on the mat. We have loaner gi's (the traditional uniform) for BJJ and Karate if you want to try before you buy, and gloves are available at the front desk for Muay Thai. The most important thing you bring is your attitude.
How long does it take to get a BJJ black belt?
The BJJ journey from white to black belt typically takes 10–15 years of consistent training. Blue belt is usually 2–4 years, purple belt another 2–3, brown belt 1–3 more, and then the black belt grading itself. At Bushido Academy, belt promotions are awarded by Marcus based on your skill level, time at rank, and attitude on the mat — never by time alone. Many students find the belt rank progression is what motivates long-term commitment to the art.
What is the age range for Kids & Teens classes?
We run three separate age tracks: Little Dragons (ages 5–7), Juniors Martial Arts (ages 8–12), and Teens (ages 13–17). Each group has age-appropriate class structures, contact levels, and belt progression systems. Family classes run Sunday mornings with adults and youth on the mat together — a great way to get started as a family.
How is the MMA team different from regular classes?
The Competition MMA Team is a dedicated competitive program requiring intermediate skill in at least two disciplines (typically BJJ + Muay Thai). Team members follow a structured periodization plan with specific fight preparation phases. Tryouts are held quarterly and require a conversation with Marcus first. Regular classes are open to all — the MMA team is a separate application-based program for those targeting amateur or professional competition.
Can I train multiple disciplines on the same membership?
Yes. Our Monthly Unlimited plan ($149/month) gives you unlimited access to all disciplines — you can do BJJ in the morning, Muay Thai in the evening, and Judo on Saturday. Many students build a well-rounded game by cross-training disciplines simultaneously. Marcus or Priya will help you plan a training schedule that balances volume and recovery.
What safety protocols do you have for sparring?
Sparring is available for intermediate students and above and is always supervised by an instructor. All striking sparring requires full protective gear (headgear, mouthguard, shin guards, gloves, and groin protection). We run sparring at controlled intensity — ego-driven "going hard" is not tolerated and is grounds for removal from the session. BJJ rolling follows standard etiquette with tap-to-submit respected immediately. Safety is our non-negotiable.
What is your cancellation and refund policy?
Monthly memberships can be cancelled at any time with 30 days' written notice — we do not charge cancellation fees. Drop-in classes are non-refundable but can be rescheduled up to 4 hours before the class start. Private coaching sessions require 24 hours' notice for cancellation or rescheduling. Family plans are billed at the household level and can be adjusted if a family member needs to pause.
