Repair or replace

The only question that actually matters.

A blocked drain has one answer. A dead compressor on a fourteen-year-old condenser has two, and you cannot choose between them without numbers. Here are ours, before you call.

Repair or replace, by system age and repair cost
System age Repair quoted Our call Why
Under 8 years Under $500 Repair it Well inside its service life and cheap to put right. Replacing now throws away years you have already paid for.
Under 8 years $500 – $1,500 Repair it Still repair, but ask what failed. One expensive part on a young system is bad luck; two in a year is a pattern.
8 – 12 years Under $1,000 Repair it Below half a replacement, and the system has usable life left. We will tell you what we expect to fail next.
8 – 12 years Over $2,000 Genuinely depends The genuinely hard case. It turns on whether the cabinet and coil are sound and how long you plan to stay in the house.
12 – 15 years Over $1,500 Replace it Past half a new system on equipment near the end of its life. A repair here buys a season, not a decade.
Over 15 years Any major repair Replace it At this age the efficiency gain alone changes the arithmetic. We will still repair it if you ask — it is your money — but we will have told you first.
Four of these six rows tell you to keep the system you have. Repairs typically run $150 – $2,500, averaging about $350. Most repairs land near the bottom of that range. The ones that reach the top are compressors, heat exchangers and coils — which is exactly when the table above starts mattering.

The 50% rule

If one repair costs more than half what a replacement system is worth, replacing is the better financial call. The same applies cumulatively: spend more than half a new system across 12–24 months of repairs and you are funding a system that is already leaving.

The age rule

Central AC and heat pumps last about 10–15 years. Gas furnaces last 15–20. Inside that window a repair usually buys real time; past it, a repair often buys a season.

The efficiency rule

Moving off an old SEER 9–10 unit to a current SEER2 system cuts cooling energy by more than a third. On a system that is already failing, that saving is part of the replacement cost, not a bonus on top of it.

Installed replacement cost and service life by system type
If you do replace Installed Service life
Central air conditioner $3,500 – $7,500 10–15 years
Gas furnace $3,000 – $6,500 15–20 years
Heat pump $4,000 – $10,000 10–15 years
Full system — AC and furnace together $6,000 – $12,000 —
2026 US installed averages. Kansas City sits near the middle of these ranges.

Two seasons, two failures

What goes wrong, and what to try before you pay us.

Two of the four first steps below are free and fix the problem often enough that we would rather you tried them.

Cooling · April to September

Warning sign
Runs constantly and the house never reaches setpoint.
Usually
Low refrigerant from a leak, a failing capacitor, or a condenser packed with cottonwood.
Do first
Change the filter and hose the outdoor coil. Both are free and both fix this surprisingly often.
Call us when
The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not turn, or there is ice on the line.

Heating · October to March

Warning sign
Short cycling — the burner lights, runs briefly, and shuts off again.
Usually
A dirty flame sensor, a blocked flue, or a restricted filter overheating the exchanger.
Do first
Change the filter, and check nothing is stacked against the return.
Call us when
You smell gas, the CO alarm sounds, or the exchanger is cracked. Leave the house for the first two.

Why Meridian Air

Sized properly. Serviced on time. Answered at 2am.

  • Load-Calculated Installs

    Manual J on Every Install

We calculate the actual load — square footage, insulation, window area, orientation, infiltration — before quoting equipment. Replacing like-for-like carries forward whatever mistake was made the first time, and oversizing is the most common one.

  • Certified, Every Tech

    NATE-Certified Technicians

Every technician on our payroll holds NATE certification and EPA 608 refrigerant handling. No subcontracted install crews, and no helper running a service call alone in their second week.

  • Real Person, Any Hour

    Answered by a Technician

When the heat quits at 2am in February you get someone who can tell you whether it is safe to wait until morning — not a call centre taking a message for the morning dispatcher.

  • Years Serving KC

    18 Years in Kansas City

We know which subdivisions were built with undersized returns, which decade of equipment is failing now, and how a Missouri August behaves against the design day the equipment was rated for.

Customer Reviews

What Kansas City homeowners say.

5-star rated on Google. Real customers. Real jobs.

  • “Two other companies quoted a five-ton unit because that is what we had. Ray ran the load calculation and told us the house needed three and a half — and that the old one had been short cycling for years, which explained why upstairs was always clammy. The new system is quieter, the humidity problem is gone, and it cost less than the quotes we turned down.”

    Alicia W.

    Brookside homeowner

  • “Furnace died on the coldest night of January. I called at 11pm expecting an answering service and got a technician who walked me through shutting off the gas, then had someone at the house before 1am. They brought space heaters in for the family while they worked. You do not forget that.”

    Marcus T.

    Overland Park, KS

  • “We joined the maintenance club after a repair and have not had an emergency since. They come in spring and autumn, they call to schedule rather than making us chase them, and last visit they caught a failing ignitor before it left us without heat.”

    The Nguyen family

Liberty · 4 years in the Meridian Club

  • “I manage twenty-two units and Meridian handles all of them. What earns the contract each year is honesty about what needs replacing now versus what has another two seasons in it. A less scrupulous contractor could have sold me eight new systems by now.”

    Dana K.

Property manager · 22 units in Waldo

  • “One bedroom over the garage ran ten degrees hotter than the rest of the house every summer. Three companies wanted to sell me a mini-split. Meridian tested static pressure, found the return was strangled, corrected the ductwork — and the room now matches the thermostat, for a fraction of the equipment I nearly bought.”

About the owner

Hi, I'm Ray Delgado.

I started Meridian Air in 2007 after twelve years installing and servicing systems for a regional contractor. What pushed me out on my own was watching too many crews sell oversized equipment because it was easier than running the numbers. An oversized air conditioner short-cycles, never pulls the humidity out, and dies years early — and the homeowner pays for it twice. We run a Manual J load calculation on every replacement, no exceptions. It takes an extra hour and it is the difference between a system that lasts eighteen years and one that limps to ten.

My commitment is straightforward: give you an honest assessment, quote you a flat price before we touch anything, do the work to code with the proper permit, and leave your home cleaner than we found it. Every technician I employ is licensed, background-checked, and trained under my direct supervision.

We are not a franchise call centre. When you call Meridian Air you reach a local company where every job carries my licence, and every replacement is sized by calculation rather than by guesswork.

FAQ

Common questions

Still have questions? Call (816) 555-0193 — we answer every call.

Call Now
How fast can you get here when the heat or the air conditioning fails?
For a genuine no-heat or no-cool emergency we dispatch within the hour, any hour, any day of the year. A technician answers the phone — so if it is safe to wait until morning, we will tell you that honestly rather than charging an after-hours rate you did not need.
How often does a system actually need servicing?
Once a year per system as a minimum: cooling in spring, heating in autumn. Most manufacturers require documented annual maintenance to keep the parts warranty valid, and the majority of emergency calls we run are failures a tune-up would have caught — a weak capacitor, a dirty flame sensor, a refrigerant charge that has been drifting for two summers.
What size air conditioner does my house need?
It is not a square-footage rule of thumb, which is exactly why so many homes are oversized. We run a Manual J load calculation using insulation levels, window area and orientation, ceiling heights and air infiltration. An oversized unit cools the air quickly, shuts off before it removes humidity, and wears itself out short cycling — a house that feels cold and clammy is usually oversized, not underpowered.
Is it worth repairing my system, or should I replace it?
A reasonable starting point is to multiply the repair cost by the age of the system; if that exceeds replacement cost, replacing usually wins. Beyond that we look at whether it still runs R-22, how it compares against current efficiency, and whether the ductwork can support a new system. We give you both numbers and the operating-cost difference, then leave the decision with you.
Do heat pumps actually work through a Missouri winter?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold useful capacity well below freezing — a long way from the reputation the technology earned decades ago. For most Kansas City homes we recommend dual fuel: the heat pump carries the majority of the season at lower cost and the furnace takes over below the balance point, where gas becomes the cheaper fuel. We calculate that crossover for your house and your utility rates.
What is happening with refrigerant, and does it affect me?
R-22 has not been produced since 2020, so systems still running it face steep and rising costs for any refrigerant repair. The industry has also moved on from R-410A to lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B on new equipment. If your system uses R-22, a significant leak is usually the point where replacement makes more sense than repair.
How often should I change the filter?
A one-inch filter every one to three months; a four- or five-inch media filter every six to twelve. Pets, allergies and construction dust shorten all of those. The costly mistake is fitting a very dense filter to a system that cannot pull air through it — high MERV in a thin filter starves the blower and can freeze the coil. If you want serious filtration the answer is a deeper cabinet, not a denser one-inch.
Are you licensed and insured, and do you pull permits?
Meridian Air holds Missouri HVAC Contractor License #MC-41207 and every technician carries EPA 608 Universal certification. We carry $2M general liability and workers' compensation on all employees. Equipment changeouts are permitted and inspected wherever the jurisdiction requires it — which protects your warranty and your position when you sell the house.
