WooCommerce · Chargebacks
Every chargeback has a deadline. The evidence that answers it is already in your orders.
Chargeproof is a WooCommerce plugin that lists every dispute with its real deadline and its true cost, matches each to its order, and fills in the eleven evidence fields that order can already answer. You review it and press send — or decide the case is not worth fighting, which it sometimes is not.
Real disputes on a live test account, not a mock-up.

The arithmetic
What chargebacks cost a store your size
A store doing 500 orders a month at a $75 average order sees around 39 disputes a year at the benchmark rate. Here is what that costs, and what changes when the evidence is already assembled.
Doing it by hand
$4,378/year
- Half the disputes never contested, because two to five hours each is not worth it on a small order
- Half of those fought are lost
- $1,599 of it is your own time
With the evidence ready
$2,260/year
- Almost all of them contested, because the work is already done
- Better evidence wins more of them
- $556 of your time instead of $1,599
Difference
$2,118/year
- Against $190 a year for Solo
- One won dispute covers the licence
- Low case $1,624 · high case $4,912
Cost per chargeback is $128 — $82 of internal handling plus $46 of third-party fees — from Chargebacks: The Case for Coordination, Mastercard and Javelin, January 2026. That link is the whole paper, free, not a summary of it. Volume is modelled at a 0.65% dispute rate, the midpoint of the 0.6–1.0% band usually quoted as typical for card-not-present e-commerce — a benchmark, not a measurement of your store. Win rates are an assumption rather than a citation: 50% without assembled evidence, 65% with. Published win rates range from about 20% to about 54% depending on whether they count every chargeback or only the contested ones, so no vendor's "2× your win rate" claim is anywhere in this arithmetic.
How it works
A missed deadline is an automatic loss
Nothing about a chargeback waits for you. The clock starts at your gateway, the evidence sits in WooCommerce, and the only thing joining the two is somebody with two tabs open and a deadline they may not have noticed.
Today
- An email from your gateway, or nothing at all.
- You open the dispute and start hunting for the order.
- You retype the fields into a form, against a clock.
- You send it once, because there is no second attempt.
With Chargeproof
- Every dispute on one screen, soonest deadline first.
- Each one matched to its order through the processor reference.
- Eleven fields already filled, each labelled with where it came from.
- A verdict on whether the case is worth answering at all.
The evidence
Eleven fields you are currently retyping
Stripe asks for twenty-eight pieces of evidence. Eleven of them Chargeproof reads straight off the order and fills in, labelling each with where it came from. The rest it leaves empty and names, rather than inventing something plausible.
Who bought it
- Name, email and phone
- The billing contact as recorded at checkout.
- The IP it was placed from
- One of the strongest signals against a claim the cardholder was never involved.
- Billing address
- Matched against what the issuer holds.
That it arrived — the whole case for "product not received"
- Carrier and tracking number
- Read from your shipment tracking, not typed again.
- The date it shipped
- And the address it actually went to, which is not always the billing one.
- What was bought
- Line items and quantities, as the customer saw them.
What it is worth answering
- The amount at risk, including the fee
- The dispute fee is charged whether you win or lose, and winning does not return it.
- The real deadline
- Read from the dispute itself, never computed from a guessed window — it varies by card network and reason.
- Whether to bother
- If the fact that decides your reason code is missing, answering will not change the outcome.
One case. Every line says where it came from, and the send button is behind a confirmation.

The chargeback guide
Thirteen pages on what a chargeback actually costs, why the deadline has to be read rather than calculated, which fact decides each reason code, and the two steps between assembled evidence and a submission you cannot take back. What makes it trustworthy
Evidence goes once, so nothing here sends without you
It tells you when not to fight
The fee is charged either way and winning does not return it. On a small order that can mean an afternoon spent recovering less than you have already paid — so the screen shows the cost beside the amount, because it changes the decision.
It refuses to guess
A field the order cannot answer is left empty and named, not filled with something plausible. With one submission and no way back, a good guess is not a convenience — it is your only attempt, spent on something untrue.
Two steps to send, always
Saving a draft and sending are separate buttons. The send step shows every field verbatim and carries a fingerprint of exactly what you were shown: if the order changes in another tab while you read, the submission is refused rather than sending something nobody reviewed.
No order, no evidence
An unmatched dispute says so and stops. Evidence from the wrong order would look entirely reasonable.
Nothing to paste
It reads the credentials your gateway already holds. Rotate the key and it follows, because no copy is stored.
Never on a schedule
There is no bulk action and no command that submits. The paid tier emails you; it does not answer for you.

Assembling it is free. Sending it is not.
Every dispute, every deadline, the true cost, the matched order and the assembled evidence — on the free plan, forever. You can copy it into your gateway by hand. What you pay for is the click, and being told before the deadline rather than after.

Questions
The ones worth asking first
Do I need to paste an API key?
No. Chargeproof reads the credentials your existing gateway already stores and verifies them before using them. A Stripe restricted key with read access can be supplied instead if you would rather narrow what it can see.
Can it submit evidence automatically?
No, and it never will, in either tier. Evidence goes once. Anything that could spend that submission without a person reading what is being sent is a bug, not a feature, so there is deliberately no scheduled submission, no bulk action and no WP-CLI command that submits. The paid tier makes sending one click instead of a copy-and-paste; it does not make it automatic.
What happens if it cannot match a dispute to an order?
It says so and stops. Evidence assembled from the wrong order would look entirely reasonable and could only be sent once, so it will not guess. The processor reference is shown so you can find the order yourself.
Is the dispute fee refunded if I win?
No. Winning returns the amount that was reversed; it does not return the fee. Chargeproof shows that number beside the amount because it changes the decision: on a low-value order, fighting and winning can still lose money, and the right move is sometimes to accept and keep the fee from doubling.
What is free and what is paid?
Everything up to the send button is free: every dispute, every deadline, the true cost including the fee, the matched order, the assembled evidence, the verdict, and saving a draft to your gateway. Chargeproof Pro adds the one-click send and the deadline emails. You can read the assembled evidence on the free tier and copy it into your gateway by hand.
Does it work with WooPayments?
Not yet. WooPayments never exposes Stripe API keys, so its disputes arrive through a different route and need their own support.
Does it work with PayPal?
Not yet. PayPal disputes are a message thread rather than an evidence submission, with a different lifecycle, and doing it properly means building for that shape rather than pretending it is the same one.
Is my payment data sent anywhere?
No. Chargeproof runs entirely inside your WordPress installation and talks only to your payment gateway. There is no third-party service in the path, and no copy of your credentials is stored — the key is read from your gateway at the moment it is needed.
The next one arrives with a deadline too
A store doing 500 orders a month sees about three chargebacks a month, and the clock on each one starts whether or not anybody has noticed. Install it before you need it — the list, the deadlines and the assembled evidence cost nothing, and one dispute you win instead of writing off covers the year.
